Environmentally-Friendly Fashion
Saturday, 10 February 2007

Around one trillion US dollars were spent on clothing last year alone. However, a recent study from the Cambridge Institute for Manufacturing may have prompted a pause for thought in the fashion industry.

The study suggests that manufacturers should increase the use of organic cotton, place more emphasis on the durability of their clothes and raise prices to encourage fewer purchases. It also calls for research into less environmentally damaging materials and production methods, and the introduction of an ‘eco tax’ on purchases.

The study also outlines how consumers can help to reduce the environmental impact of the clothes they buy. It emphasises buying fewer clothes and using them for longer. Clothes should be washed less often, at lower temperatures, using ecologically-friendly detergent. Old clothes should be recycled rather than discarded.

It is hoped that these measures will reduce carbon emissions from the production and washing of clothes, as well as the landfill space occupied by discarded clothing.
